Samuel de Champlain (1574-1635) stammte vermutlich aus einer Seefahrerfamilie und machte erste Erfahrungen bei Fahrten in die Karibik und nach Mittelamerika auf dem Schiff seines Onkels. Seine Reisen und Missionen nach Nordamerika führten zur Gründung von Québec und Neufrankreich. Er wurde in Gefechten mit den Irokesen verwundet, studierte aber auch deren Lebensweise und die anderer Indianer und hinterließ uns mehrere Reiseberichte und ein Traktat über Führungsstil, Seemannskunst und Navigation.
