One of Anderson’s most successful works, this 1920 novel moves from the banks of the Mississippi River to a small town in Ohio, tracing the rise from poverty of inventor Hugh Mc Vey. As in Winesburg, Ohio, Anderson’s critique of industrialization’s impact on the land and soul of rural America is scathing.
