History of Woman Suffrage reflects the history of voting in the United States from its beginnings to the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment. It is a comprehensive review of the most important historical events on more than 5000 pages. For decades this book has remained a significant source of primary information on suffrage movements in the United States and is a valuable source of information today. Although the work was written by leaders and members of the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA), it doesn’t cover the deeds of the other women suffrage organizations. Yet, even today, the History of Woman Suffrage remains ‘the richest repository of published, accessible documentary evidence of nineteenth-century suffrage movements, ‘ as researchers state.

The authors of the book Susan B. Anthony, Matilda Joslyn Gage, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Ida Husted Harper were active members of the American suffrage movement, public speakers, and lecturers. They were members of the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA). To create the ‘History of Woman Suffrage, ‘ two authors, Sutton and Antony, moved in together. Antony was a busy manager, organizing the meetings and collecting contributions from other suffragists. She hated writing and used to say, ‘I love to make history but hate to write it.’ So, most of the text was written by Sutton. Gage helped to trace the facts to historical sources and contributed with several essays. Later, as Anthony bought the rights on the book from Sutton and Gage, she hired Ida Husted Harper to create the fourth volume of the book. The joint work didn’t bring much profit, and Antony used money from her bequest to self-publish the book, many copies of which she handed out to open libraries.
