Walter Besant (1836–1901) was an English novelist and historian who left an indelible mark on the literary landscape of the Victorian era. Born in Portsmouth and educated at King’s College, London, and Christ’s College, Cambridge, where he earned a scholarship in classics, Besant started his career as a senior assistant master at the Royal College of Mauritius. However, his passion for writing drew him back to England in 1867, where he transitioned to literature and began his prolific writing career. Besant initially collaborated with James Rice on a series of novels, wherein they co-authored several works until Rice’s untimely death in 1882. Besant’s solo career flourished as he penned such well-regarded novels as ‘The Case of Mr. Lucraft’ (1876), which showcases his affinity for blending supernatural elements with keen social observations, characteristic of his unique literary style which frequently featured themes of societal injustice and advocacy for reform.
