The Roman Tragedy Volume of The Complete Works of Shakespeare includes four historical tragedy plays created by Shakespeare:The Tragedy of Titus Andronicus, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, The Tragedy of Antony and Coriolanus.Titus Andronicus is Shakespeare’s first tragedy. Full of passion and vendetta, this story is a model of English drama and one of Shakespeare’s most successful works. It was the product of the popularity of the revenge drama "blood and tears" at that time. The play was a success at creating scary scenes, and was well received by audiences at the time, bringing the young Shakespeare a certain reputation. A happy bride saw her husband stabbed to death by two enemies and dragged deep into a forest. After the two thugs took turns to vent their lust on her, they cut out her tongue and cut off her hands. When she appeared again, the audience saw a beautiful body like a flower, covered with blood, like a ghost from hell. The Tragedy of Julius Caesar is one of Shakespeare’s tragedies. The great Caesar was assassinated, but the opposition could not replace him either in prestige or in political ability. There was a vacuum in Roman power, and the two rival parties went to war. After the fall of Brutus, there was an internal struggle between Antony and Octavian who seized the political power… Written in 1607, The Tragedy of Antony and Cleopatra is arguably Shakespeare’s fifth greatest tragedy. Antony is an ancient Roman general and Cleopatra is the queen of ancient Egypt. The love between the hero and the beauty is adult love, which is both passionate and profound and at the mercy of the changing political and military situation. This is a play with a broad horizon, spanning ten years, Europe and Africa. In the end, the hero and the beauty failed and died of love, which was itself a tragic event, and the consequences of which played a crucial role in the transition of Rome from a republic to a monarchy. The tragedy of Coriolanus is a Roman historical tragedy written by Shakespeare in his later years. It tells the story of the hero of the Roman republic, Marcel (known as Coriolanus), who was expelled from Rome because he was suspicious, hot-tempered and offended the public. The author takes the relation between the hero and the masses as the main line and reveals the weakness of human nature.
