NELLA LARSEN, am 13. April 1891 in Chicago, Illinois, als Nellie Walker geboren. Ihre Mutter war eine dänische Immigrantin. 1919 heiratete sie den bekannten Physiker Elmer Imes und begann zu schreiben. 1928 veröffentlichte Larsen ihren ersten Roman “Quicksand”, ein Jahr später erschien “Passing”. Sie reiste durch Europa, verkehrte in literarischen Zirkeln und schrieb an einem dritten Roman, der allerdings nie erschien. Nach ihrer Scheidung 1933 lebte sie zurückgezogen und arbeitete erneut als Krankenschwester. Sie starb am 30. März 1964 in Brooklyn.
