The author was born in Latvia in 1935 of ethnically Russian parents. During World War II (1944), he and his family moved to Germany, and after the war ended, the family came to the U. S. (1951). Here, the author received his high school and college educations (B. A. Univ. of Chicago, 1956), and in 1960 he earned his Ph. D. in biochemistry (Univ. of Illinois). After post-doctoral work at Oak Ridge Natl. Lab. and USDA”s Animal Disease Laboratories, he became Asst. Prof. in the biochemistry departments of Rush Medical College and Univ. of Illinois in Chicago. In 1973, he was promoted to full professorship. He remained with Rush Medical College until he retired from full-time work in 2000. During his tenure at Rush, he was married to Marilyn Grib (1964); they had two sons together, Gregory (1965) and Alexander (1969). In 1977, he earned a law degree (J.D.) from the Chicago-Kent Coli. of Law and developed a course in science and the law for Rush”s graduate students. At Rush, he taught biochemistry to medical, nursing, and medical tech. students and also functioned as director of all educational activities of the department, including biochemistry graduate student Ph. D. program. On a part-time basis, until 2005, he taught biochemistry to students of the Dr. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine and the Illinois College of Optometry. He is the author of some 150 publications on topics of iron metabolism and the physiology of bifidobacteria, including several books. In 2008, he published a memoir entitled ALL WAS NOT LOST in which he summarized his life-time experiences.
