This 1897 novel is framed as a collection of tales told by “Ambrose, the Fransiscan, ” a medieval monk. The titular Count Antonio is a nobleman forced into outlawry when his love for the ward of Duke Valentine is spurned. “The charm of the book lies in the simplicity and gravity of the narrator’s manner, ” wrote the New York Times.
