Basil Wilson Duke (1838–1916) was an American lawyer, soldier, and author, most famously known for his role as a Confederate general during the American Civil War and for his seminal work, “History of Morgan”s Cavalry” (1867). Born in Georgetown, Kentucky, Duke graduated from Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, and subsequently obtained a law degree from Lexington”s Transylvania University. His military career began with his enlistment in the Confederate Army, where he swiftly rose to prominence as a cavalier under the command of General John Hunt Morgan, his brother-in-law. Duke”s gallantry in raids and his strategic acumen earned him the rank of General by the war”s end. Post-war, Duke returned to law but his experiences led him to document the exploits of Morgan”s Cavalry, providing a detailed account of their operations and strategies, offering valuable insights into Confederate cavalry tactics. His literary style combined a scholarly narrative with a vivid portrayal of warfare, tinged with the romanticism and camaraderie of the Southern cause. Duke”s writings contributed significantly to Civil War literature, preserving the lore of the Confederate cavalry and providing a window into the complex military and social dynamics of the time. His work remains a critical resource for historians and enthusiasts of American military history, encapsulating the legacy of a notable figure from a tumultuous era.
