When Tom, a poor chimney sweep, drowns and is transformed into a tiny water baby, he enters a magical underwater world where he learns a series of moral lessons and eventually earns his return to human form. A children’s tale, it incorporates Charles Kingsley’s favorite themes: the working conditions of the poor, education, and public health.
