Here the author covers the Celtic, Roman and Anglo-Saxon periods of occupation. His narrative, primarily concerned with political and military history, is founded on deep research, but often reads as smoothly as fiction.

Sir Charles William Chadwick Oman (1860-1946) was a British military historian. His meticulously researched histories are invested with a lively human sympathy which engenders a novelistic feel. Among his chief works are The Art of War in the Middle Ages (1885) and History of the Peninsular War (1902-03). He was knighted in 1920.
