Published in 1853, this novel of gothic sensationalism and class struggle, featuring the wealthy Van Huyden family, has the narrative momentum—and subtlety—of a freight train. ‘Has this wealth no duties to mankind?’ he demands rhetorically in a question that could as easily be asked today.
Over de auteur
George Lippard (1822-1854) was an American novelist, journalist, and progressive activist. Popular in his day, he is undeservedly forgotten today. In his brief life and even shorter career, he published prodigiously in a variety of genres from gothic romance to historical fiction, including the books, The Monks of Monk Hall (1844)—or The Quaker City—and Legends of the Revolution (1847).
