In these short stories, Moore affectionately depicts authentic scenes of Irish rural life. Moore originally penned them for translation into Irish as part of the Irish Renaissance movement. The stories, which focus on the themes of Church oppression, poverty, and emigration, have been praised as the first Irish short stories and forerunners to Joyce’s Dubliners.
Over de auteur
George Augustus Moore (1852-1933) was a pioneering modern Irish writer. He had to fight against censorship early in his career. Despite the powerful forces arrayed against him, Moore succeeded in establishing realism as a legitimate literary mode. His best-known novels include A Mummer’s Wife (1885) and Esther Waters (1894).
