Hendrik Willem van Loon (1882-1944) was a Dutch-American writer and journalist. Born in Rotterdam, he became an American citizen in 1919. As a journalist, he covered the Russian Revolution of 1905 and the start of World War I. He wrote a number of well-received children’s books, many of which he illustrated himself.
