A compelling portrait of Charles Dickens written by one of his closest friends. Forster’s biography details Dickens’s impoverished childhood and the impact it had on his later life and, of course, his books, as well as exploring his drive to succeed, his early writings, and his marriage.

John Forster (1812-1876) was a British biographer, editor, and critic—an intimate and peer of the leading literary lights of his day, such as Dickens, Browning, and Carlyle. He is best remembered today for his biography of Charles Dickens (1872-74), but he also wrote biographies of Oliver Goldsmith (1848) and Jonathan Swift (1875), among others.
