The great poet, who served as an orderly at a military hospital in World War I, took up his pen in 1916 to aid the British cause. One of the results, written to counter German propaganda in the United States, was this account of the Allied failure against well-entrenched Turkish forces in the Dardanelles.

John Masefield (1878-1967) was an English poet and novelist. He also served for the Red Cross most of his life. He is best known today for the classic children’s fantasy novels The Midnight Folk (1927) and The Box of Delights (1935), as well as his memorable poetry. Masefield was appointed Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom in 1930, a position he held until his death.
