Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Theorie und Methode der historischen Kulturwissenschaften sowie Politik und Kultur des spätmittelalterlichen Europas. Er ist Sprecher des Forschungsschwerpunktes Historische Kulturwissenschaften der Universität Mainz.
