L.C.Jain (b. December 13, 1925): Active in the Quit India Movement during the freedom struggle. As Independence in 1947 came with partition with millions of families uprooted, he gave up studies at the University and plunged in as a volunteer in the task of relief and rehabilitation which offered opportunities for trying new ideas to rebuild India where people”s initiative and self-help played a central role. Faridabad was one such venture with which he was actively associated from the inception. The trying of new ideas needed an institutional platform. Thus was born the Indian Cooperative Union (ICU) in 1948 led by the Socialist leader. Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay. He was one of the founders of ICU and its General Secretary for the first two decades. An account of ICU”s contribution to India”s development in diverse fields-rural, urban, handicrafts, hand looms through cooperatives, is contained in; In the Wake of Freedom-India”s Tryst with Cooperatives (1996). The City of Hope is a companion Volume which narrates the story of Faridabad where he played an active role. Over the past five decades he has been active in advocacy of democratic decentralisation and just and equitable economic policies as a member of the Planning Boards of various States and the National Planning Commission. He is co-author of Grass Without Roots, Rural Development under Government Auspices, and In the Wake of Freedom: India”s Tryst with Cooperatives. He received the Magsaysay Award for Public Service in 1989.
