Hosmer De Vere is a respected stage actor who has fallen on hard times. Recently afflicted with a disorder that renders him unable to project his voice, he has not been able to find a suitable role for some time, and his family is suffering financially as a result. His teenage daughters Alice and Ruth convince him to explore the possibility of acting in silent films, and he reluctantly agrees. Soon, he and both of his daughters are rising stars.
