Se desarrolla según el ritmo de las canciones infantiles y plasma las fantasías y las pesadillas de la infancia. Esta obra maestra del nonsense (disparate) se prolonga en A través del espejo (1872). En Alicia, el mundo de los adultos, incomprensible, irracional e ilógico para los niños, se convierte en una fantasía y en un juego. En ella el autor hace alarde del conocimiento de la psicología infantil y de su cultura matemática.
