Estrogens comprise a group of structurally related and hormonally active molecules derived from cholesterol. 17b-estradiol (E2) is the most potent member of this group. In Chapter One, the authors summarize various aspects of estradiol signaling, with special emphasis in the fast action of the hormone. Chapter Two discusses estradiol signaling pathways and how deficiency of estrogen, in the postmenopausal period, would cause CVS diseases and the potential therapeutic effect of estrogen for preventing cardiovascular diseases in postmenopausal women. Chapter Three covers a project that was undertaken to obtain an unbiased survey of differential gene expression in the liver in response to estrogen, TAM, and RAL.
