Radcylffe Hall, ursprünglich mit dem Vornamen ›Marguerite‹ versehen, später jedoch nur noch als ›John‹ bekannt, kam am 12.8.1880 im englischen Bournemouth zur Welt. Mit 21 Jahren erbte sie von ihrem Großvater ein beträchtliches Vermögen und bezog ein eigenes Haus, hielt Reitpferde und eine Hundemeute, reiste viel und schrieb Gedichte. Mit 27 Jahren lernte sie in Bad Homburg die 50-jährige Mabel Veronica Batten kennen, genannt Ladyes, eine verheiratete Frau der Gesellschaft. Die beiden Frauen verliebten sich ineinander und lebten für die nächsten zehn Jahre zusammen. Die Idylle endete, als John sich in die 28-jährige Una Troubridge verliebte, die Frau eines Admirals und Mutter einer Tochter. Nach dem Tod von Ladyes lebte John mit Una Troubridge zusammen, trug das Haar kurz und kleidete sich in Männerhemden mit Krawatten und Tweed- oder Smokingjacken, allerdings stets zu Röcken, und rauchte in der Öffentlichkeit Zigaretten und Zigarren. Nach dem Studium der Schriften des Sexualwissenschaftlers Havelock Ellis betrachtete Radclyffe Hall ihre Homosexualität – die damals gemeinhin als Sünde, Krankheit oder moralisch verwerfliches Laster galt – als angeboren und daher als unabänderlich – eine von Schuldgefühlen enorm befreiende Sichtweise, die auch in ihren Roman »Quell der Einsamkeit« einfloss – dem ersten Roman über lesbische Frauen oder »Invertierte« außerhalb des pornografischen Genres. Er erschien 1928, erregte großes Aufsehen und wurde rasch verboten, was seiner Verbreitung jedoch eher zuträglich war. Mittlerweile gilt »Quell der Einsamkeit« als ein Klassiker der lesbischen Literatur – ein Buch, mit dem sich die Autorin seinerzeit mutig outete und für die Toleranz der Gesellschaft gegenüber Lesben warb – ein Buch, das als faszinierendes Zeitdokument zu lesen ist und als ein Vorläufer von Leslie Feinbergs Roman »Stone Butch Blues« gelten kann.
