Die Erstausgabe der Schatzinsel erschien 1883 London. Stevenson hatte bei einem Kuraufenthalt 1880/81 bereits erste Skizzen angefertigt. Im Sommer ’81 zeichnete er mit Lloyd, seinem Stiefsohn eine Schatzkarte, durch die er sich zu seiner Erzählung inspirieren lies. Der Romen erschien zuerst 1881/’82 als Mehrteiler in einer Jugendzeitschrift, erst später in Buchform.
