In Rudyard Kipling’s 1901 novel “Kim”, an orphan boy of poor Irish parents makes his living on the streets of Lahore running errands. After befriending a Tibetan monk, Kim undertakes several adventures which ultimately put him at the heart of “The Great Game”, the geopolitical struggle between Britain and Russia for the control of India and Afghanistan. Notable for its vivid descriptions of the people, culture and landscape of India, Kim ranked number 78 on the Modern Library’s 100 best english language novels.

Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was an English journalist, short-story writer, poet, and novelist. The celebrated author of The Jungle Book and Kim, he was born in India during the British Raj which inspired much of his work. He also wrote two dystopian science fiction tales: With the Night Mail (1905) and ‘As Easy As A. B. C.’ (1912).
