This novel, seen through the eyes of the young protagonist Dabao, depicts the fates of three families from different social strata-Dabao’s grandparents, General Tu’s family, and Xiu’er’s family-during the Anti-Japanese War. It successfully portrays the image of General Tu, a fallen member of the Eight Banners, who transforms from a prodigal son into a brave anti-Japanese warrior in the face of national crisis. As the story unfolds, a rich and vivid scroll of old Beijing is slowly revealed. It vividly portrays the daily life of old Beijing and many folk customs, and from this, it showcases the changes in historical society, truly achieving both education and entertainment. The work also portrays the excellent qualities of the Chinese people through the touching relationship between Dabao’s grandparents and General Tu’s family, full of positive energy.
