Henry, a dreamer who spent his youth reading in the library of an old house, one day begins to come upon famous writers of the past from his books, and they seem more real to him than the flesh-and-blood world.

Walter de la Mare (1873–1956) creates work which brims with romantic themes such as dreams, death, emotion, childhood fantasies, and the pursuit of the transcendent. His first major book, the poetry collection Songs of Childhood, was considered a significant example of children’s literature. De la Mare also wrote a number of short stories and novels.
