An enormously popular poet in his day, Watson turned his hand to writing critical essays as well, long before this 1893 volume was published. Here, Watson’s gifted eye turns to
Tess of the D’Ubervilles, Keats, Lowell’s critical writing, and Austin Dobson, among other authors and works.
Over de auteur
Sir William Watson (1858-1935) was a prolific English poet and critic. He was a contender for Poet Laureate following the death of Tennyson, but lost out because of his strong political views. His many poetry collections included The Prince’s Quest and Other Poems (1880), The Hope of the World and Other Poems (1898), and Retrogression and Other Poems (1917).
