H. G. Adler wurde 1910 in Prag als Sohn einer deutschsprachigen jüdischen Handwerkerfamilie geboren und studierte dort Musikwissenschaft, Literaturwissenschaft, Soziologie und Philosophie an der Deutschen Universität. Adler war 1941-45 in verschiedenen Konzentrationslagern interniert, widmete sich nach der Befreiung 1945 zunächst der Erziehung von Waisenkindern in Prag und emigrierte 1947 nach London, wo er 1988 starb. Mehr als die Hälfte seines literarischen Werkes ist bislang unveröffentlicht. U.a. wurde Adler mit dem Leo-Baeck-Preis (1958) und der Buber-Rosenzweig-Medaille (1974) ausgezeichnet.
