Seneca’s The Apocolocyntosis, a malicious skit on ‘the deification of Claudius the Clod’, was designed by the author to ingratiate himself with Nero, who was Claudius’ successor. Together, the two provide a powerful insight into a darkly fascinating period of Roman history.
