Danilo Kiš, 1935 in Subotica als Sohn eines ungarischen Juden und einer Montenegrinerin geboren, zählt zu den bedeutendsten europäischen Autoren der Gegenwart. Er starb 1989 in Paris. Sein Werk umfasst Romane, Erzählungen, Gedichte und Essays. Neben dem Schreiben arbeitete Kis auch als Übersetzer aus dem Ungarischen, Französischen und Russischen.
