Godfrey Ashby grew up in Chester and was profoundly influenced by his French teacher at the King”s School there. After service in the Intelligence Corps, he was ordained in Southwark Cathedral and worked in the St Helier Estate before marrying and going to South Africa, where he spent the best part of 40 years in pastoral and academic work. He was then elected Bishop of St. John”s diocese in Transkei (since divided into three). After St. John”s, he returned to England as Assistant Bishop of Leicester and eventually retired to Knysna and then to a retirement home near Exeter.
