Siddhartha is a classic for everyone in quest of self-knowledge and maturity. This book has inspired, and delighted readers from all over the world, and PBS’s The Great American Read nominated it as one of America’s best-loved novels. The novel is set in a place and time far away from the Germany of 1922, and it is full of the charm of Hesse grandparents’ life in India, and his mother fables. His mother was born in India, and their grandparents lived almost all their life as missionaries in that country. The novel is a document of Hermann Hesse’s time and philosophical studies, synthesizing Eastern religions, Jungian archetypes, and Western philosophy into an epic tale full of desire for research of meaning, the real meaning of this life.
Siddhartha is a wealthy Indian Brahmin who casts off a life of privilege and comfort to seek spiritual fulfillment and wisdom like Saint Francisco. On his journey, Siddhartha encounters ascetics, Buddhist monks, and successful merchants, as well as a beautiful girl named Kamala. Traveling and trying to live his thoughts among these people, Siddhartha discovers that actual knowledge comes from within.
