Margery Sharp, 1905 in Salesbury geboren, verbrachte einen Teil ihrer Kindheit in Malta. 1914 kehrte sie nach England zurück und nahm als eine der ersten Frauen an einem Debattier-Wettbewerb in den USA teil. Ihre ersten Erzählungen veröffentlichte sie im Alter von 21 und schrieb u.a. für Harper”s Bazaar, Ladies” Home Journal und Good Housekeeping. Für ihren ersten Roman, Rhododendron Pie, brauchte sie nur einen Monat, er erschien 1930. Die Abenteuer der Cluny Brown, einer ihrer erfolgreichsten Romane, wurde 1946 in Hollywood von Ernst Lubitsch unter dem Titel Cluny Brown auf Freiersfüßen verfilmt. Auch ihr Roman Die vollkommene Lady schaffte es in Hollywood auf die Leinwand und kam 1948 unter dem deutschen Titel Die unvollkommene Dame mit Greer Garson und Elizabeth Taylor in die Kinos. In ihrer langen Karriere schrieb sie 26 Romane für Erwachsene, zahlreiche Erzählungen, einige Bühnenstücke und 14 Kinderbücher. Viele ihrer Werke erwiesen sich als internationale Bestseller, am bekanntesten ist wohl der Walt-Disney-Zeichentrickfilm Bernard und Bianca – Die Mäusepolizei (1977), der auf Sharps Jugendroman Bianca und ihre Freunde (The Rescuers, 1959) basierte. Margery Sharp starb 1991 in Aldeburgh, Suffolk.
