O autorze

Matilde Serao (1856-1927) was a prominent Italian journalist and novelist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, renowned for her insightful representation of daily life in Naples and her role in social commentary. Born in Patras, Greece, to an Italian father and a Greek mother, Serao moved to Italy as a young child. She began her literary career as a journalist, co-founding the newspaper 'Il Mattino’ with her then-husband Edoardo Scarfoglio. Her journalistic background informed the realism that marks her literary work, with a keen eye for the details of urban life and the struggles of the lower classes (’Encyclopedia of Italian Literary Studies’, 2007). Serao’s literary oeuvre is vast and diverse, including a multitude of novels, short stories, and essays. One of her notable works is 'Il ventre di Napoli’ (The Belly of Naples), in which she vividly describes the conditions of the poor in Naples. 'After the Pardon’ (’Dopo il perdono’, 1891) remains significant amongst her works, delving into themes of love, betrayal, and forgiveness, and reflecting her characteristic blend of emotional depth with societal critique. Her narrative style often combines naturalistic elements with psychological introspection, making her work pioneering for her time. Serao was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature four times, solidifying her legacy as a key figure in Italian literature (’The Oxford Companion to Italian Literature’, 2002).
