Paul Marcus, 1901 als Sohn einer jüdischen Kaufmannsfamilie in Beeskow geboren, lebte seit 1911 in Berlin. Banklehre und Arbeit als Bankkaufmann. Ab 1924 journalistisch tätig, vor allem als Theater- und Filmkritiker und Feuilletonist, meist unter dem Kürzel PEM. Freundschaft mit vielen Regisseuren, Schauspielern und Autoren, u.a. Billy Wilder, Max Herrmann-Neisse, Egon Erwin Kisch, Hans Habe, Hans Albers oder Gabriele Tergit.März 1933 Flucht und Emigration über Prag nach Wien, ab 1937 in London. Dort Korrespondent für amerikanische Filmzeitschriften und deutsche Exilblätter, Herausgeber eines wöchentlichen Exil-Nachrichtendienstes in deutscher Sprache. Gabriele Tergit nannte ihn den „Pressesprecher des Exils”. 1940 Eintritt in die britische Armee, Einsatz in Dünkirchen, 1942 aus gesundheitlichen Gründen entlassen. Nach 1945 Mitarbeit bei verschiedenen neugegründeten Zeitungen und Zeitschriften, u.a. Die Neue Zeitung, Münchener Illustrierte, Stuttgarter Zeitung, Schweizer Illustrierte Zeitung. 1948 erstes Wiedersehen mit Deutschland und Berlin. Er bleibt aber in England.1972 stirbt er in London. Seine zweite Frau vernichtet den gesamten Nachlass mit unschätzbaren Dokumenten und Briefen aus der Exil- und Nachkriegszeit.
