Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821–1890) was a British explorer, geographer, translator, writer, soldier, orientalist, cartographer, ethnologist, spy, linguist, poet, fencer, and diplomat. Burton was known for his adventures in Asia, Africa, and the Americas, as well as his extraordinary knowledge of languages and cultures; he was said to have spoken at least 29 languages. He is renowned for his daring expedition to Mecca, which he undertook in disguise, at a time when Europeans were forbidden entry on pain of death. His account of this journey was published in 1855 as 'The Pilgrimage to Al-Madinah & Meccah, ’ which is considered one of the greatest travel books in the English language (Burton, 1855). This journey displayed Burton’s ability to immerse himself in different cultures and his keen eye for detail. His translation of 'The Arabian Nights’ remains a classic in English literature.
