Volume One begins by discussing the causes of the war and the conflicting views of America and Britain. It describes battles on the ocean and on lakes in the years 1812 and 1813.

Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) was the 26th President of the United States. His politics led the U.S. more deeply into global affairs, and his leadership helped to found the Progressive Movement. He was also a writer, naturalist, and soldier as well as a politician. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906. He lived by his slogan, “speak softly and carry a big stick.”
