Alfred Gell (1945-1997) trabajaba como profesor adjunto de Antropología en la London School of Economics and Political Science y era miembro de la British Academy. La London School le otorgó de manera póstuma la cátedra que Gell siempre había declinado. El autor publicó tres libros a lo largo de su vida: Metamorphosis of the Cassowaries (1975), The Anthropology of Time (1992), y Wrapping in Images: Tattooing in Polynesia (1993).
