The story takes place in the central part of Lonoke County Arkansas. There is a real plantation there called the Silver Leaf farm. I grew up in that neighborhood. The book is fiction but the story setting is not. Penny Parks worked in the fields and later promoted to the farm office and cotton gin. The owner of the Silverleaf, H.B. Hackett, raised cutting horses as a business and a hobby. A professional horse trainer was employed by the farm. Mr. Hackett’s grandson introduced her to the trainer and was given the opportunity to ride a horse. She loved it and developed a talent for cutting horses. She fell in love with the grandson and heir to the farm. The ending will surprise you.
This was a fun book to write. It is different to any other Sharecroppers Daughter books. It is a good story. Any reader will feel better after reading it.
