Buchanan was born in Hanover, Jamaica, in 1928. He has held various jobs, working as a welder, builder, and contractor. He currently lives in Los Angeles, California. Buchanan has ten childrenseven sons and three daughters. In his spare time, he enjoys playing checkers. The Secret of the Unknown Powers is his first book.
