Sexuality has become a subject of heightened interest in the African region, partly due to the public health issues with which it intertwines. While it may come across as a ‘new’ field of investigation in the public health context, beyond this framework, sexuality in sub-Saharan Africa is far from a novel domain of intellectual inquiry. Underscoring this point, this book draws a variety of sexuality-related materials from various fields and eras, making this mosaic collection available for a much wider readership now that the subject is being given attention in public health. The book combines older readings with recent writings on sexuality to demonstrate that much of what is presented as ‘new’ or groundbreaking in public health has actually been part of a long-standing conversation in the fields of social science and humanities. This book aims to bring these parallel conversations (the old and the new, the explicitly and implicitly health-related) together, illuminating the theoretical and methodological approaches available for addressing the complex issue of sexuality in the public health sphere.
