Donald Kennedy received his Ph D in biology from Harvard in 1956 and taught at Syracuse University before coming to Stanford in 1960, where he was Chair of the Department of Biology (1964–72), Founder and Director of the Program in Human Biology (1973–77), Provost (1979-80), President of the University (1980–92), and Bing Professor of Environmental Science. He served as commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (1977–79) and as Editor-in-Chief of Science Magazine (2000–08). He is author and editor of a long list of books and articles, including Academic Duty (1997) and The Last of Your Springs (1998).
