Born on Easter Sunday, April 20, 1845, in Breslau, Prussia (now Wrocław, Poland), Eckstein showed an inclination towards literature at a young age. His educational background included the Maria-Magdalenen-Gymnasium in Breslau, followed by the study of philosophy at the University of Berlin, where he was influenced by the works of Hegel and the historicist school of thought.
