Felix Adler (1851-1933) was a Jewish professor of political and social ethics who came to America from Germany at the age of six. Founder of the Society of Ethical Culture in 1877, Adler believed in a social system that derived its ethical tenets from reason as opposed to organized religion and that acted on the basis of public good.
