Frances Ellen Watkins Harper (1825–1911) was an African American novelist and poet who focused her life on abolitionist causes. Because she was born free, she was able to receive an education and published Forest Leaves, her first volume of poetry, at twenty. She continued publishing novels and poetry into old age.
