This personal record of the Civil War was edited and published in 1910 by Francis Fearn, who may have been the granddaughter of the author. The diary records the tribulations of a Confederate family from Bayou La Fourche. After the fall of New Orleans to the Union, they became refugees: eventually removing to Texas, Mexico, Cuba, and finally Paris by the War’s end. The journal records the family’s dealings with their slaves, their hopes and fears, and the challenges facing civilians as the Confederate States slowly collapsed in defeat.
