John Fox Jr. was born in Kentucky to a schoolmaster father and was educated at home before attending Harvard University. He graduated from Harvard in 1883 and went on to Columbia University Law School before dropping out to pursue a career in journalism. Then he moved to Big Stone Gap, Virginia, which became the popular setting of his novels, including this one. Theodore Roosevelt even invited him to the White House after hearing him give a public lecture.
