This book offers an overview of the most important research and developments in silvopastoral systems of the northern part of South America and Central America, including the most common silvopastoral arrangements in each country and their characteristics in terms of productivity, and environmental and socioeconomic aspects. Featuring a compilation of original research articles, country overviews and reviews of the contribution of silvopastoral systems to different topics, it summarizes the state-of-the-art knowledge regarding various aspects of silvopastoral systems in this region.

Dr. Julián Chará is the research coordinator of CIPAV (Centre for Research on Sustainable Agriculture) in Colombia. With over 30 years of experience in the field of sustainable cattle ranching, watershed protection and environmental services, he is the coordinator of the Global Network of Silvopastoral Systems and leads several projects related to sustainable cattle ranching, climate change mitigation and silvopastoral systems in Colombia. He coordinated the preparation of the project “Mainstreaming biodiversity in sustainable cattle ranching” that established over 30, 000 ha of silvopastoral systems in Colombia. He has published over 30 articles, book chapters and books, and is the coordinator of Editorial CIPAV and Associate Editor of the Journal Agroforestry Systems.
Dr. Shibu Jose is currently the Associate Dean for Research in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources at the University of Missouri. Previously he served as the Directorof the School of Natural Resources and also led the Center for Agroforestry at the University of Missouri. He also served as the editor-in-chief of Agroforestry Systems, the premier journal in the field of agroforestry, published by Springer-Nature for 14 years. He has led major interdisciplinary research projects involving agronomists, plant breeders, soil scientists, animal scientists, natural resource scientists and socio-economists. He uses ecological information in designing agroforestry systems and restoring degraded and damaged ecosystems. Over the past 25 years, Dr. Jose and his research team have conducted studies in the U.S., Australia, Costa Rica, Belize, Panama, Bangladesh, Indonesia and India.
