He is the author of The Hollow Crown: Ethnohistory of an Indian Kingdom and the editor of Colonialism and Culture and In Near Ruins. He has taught at the University of Michigan, the California Institute of Technology, and the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociale in Paris.
