Nomakula Shweni – championing HIV education
A veteran professional nurse of twenty years, Noma has been championing HIV and Aids awareness campaigns and education specifically for children and the youth since 1992 whilst working in a Khayelitsha Clinic in the Western Cape, South Africa. She has completed numerous courses on HIV Management, the latest being a Master of Philosophy in HIV Management from the University of Stellenbosch and is currently doing a doctorate in Health Studies in the University of South Africa in a bid to gain more understanding of the disease in children.
Her biggest frustration in providing the very best support and information to the people that she cares for has been the lack of available material that will assist communities to deal specifically with social related issues in babies, children and young adults – “Children are never included in the treatment plan, even at a stage when they get to the point of understanding what HIV is about.” Currently prevention methods only look at those who have a choice not to be infected.
